Breville Barista Express: Grinder Not Dispensing Coffee

The BES870XL integrated grinder uses a conical burr set that discharges ground coffee through a 6mm-wide exit chute into the portafilter basket. This chute bridges with compacted coffee when oily dark-roast beans are used consistently — the oils bind the fine grounds into a semi-solid plug that the grinder's impeller cannot push through.

  1. Empty the bean hopper completely. Set the grind dial to the coarsest setting (position 1). Run the grinder for 10 seconds with no beans — this reverses the impeller direction briefly and often dislodges a soft plug.
  2. Use a wooden skewer or chopstick inserted through the portafilter chute to manually break up and push through any visible compacted coffee. Do not use metal tools — the burr surface scratches easily.
  3. Grind 20g of dry, uncooked white rice through the grinder. Rice absorbs the coffee oils that cause bridging and abrades the burr and chute surfaces clean. Discard the rice output, then grind and discard 10g of fresh beans before resuming normal use.

The primary cause of grinder clogging is high-oil beans used on fine settings. If you prefer dark roasts, set the grind one step coarser than your usual setting and compensate with dose weight. Clean the grinder chute monthly using the rice method. Remove the bean hopper and wipe its interior with a dry cloth weekly — the hopper inner walls accumulate oil that falls into the burr chamber.

Is it safe to use rice to clean the Breville Barista Express grinder?

Yes, for the BES870XL specifically. The conical stainless burrs handle uncooked rice without damage. Use white rice, not brown — brown rice has a higher oil content and slightly harder kernel that can stress the burr at fine settings. Run the rice on the medium grind setting (5–6), not on fine. Dedicated grinder cleaning tablets (Grindz, Full Circle) are an alternative that some users prefer — they are slightly more effective at oil absorption and produce less abrasion.

The grinder runs but produces no coffee and makes a high-pitched sound. Is this a different problem?

Yes. A grinder that runs audibly at high pitch with no output typically means the burrs are spinning freely without engaging beans — the grind setting is at the finest end of the range and the bean feed is blocked above the burrs rather than in the chute below. Check the hopper bottom: a bridge of unground beans spanning the hopper outlet is often the cause. Shake the hopper and probe the outlet with a wooden skewer to break up any bean bridge.
