The Barista Pro's adjustable pre-infusion setting passes a small amount of low-pressure water through the group head before full extraction begins. This has a secondary effect beyond its primary purpose (even saturation): it pre-warms the group head. Users running 4–8 second pre-infusion often report more temperature-stable shots than users with pre-infusion disabled — even without a separate pre-flush. If you skip the manual pre-flush, enabling pre-infusion at 4+ seconds provides a partial substitute.
The ThermoJet's smaller water volume means it requires more frequent descaling than the Barista Express thermocoil — every 6–7 weeks in moderate-hard water (7 GPG) versus 8–10 weeks for the thermocoil. Is the Barista Pro's temperature more stable than the Barista Express?
In practice, slightly — but mostly due to user behavior rather than hardware. The Barista Pro's numeric LCD display prompts users to wait for stabilization in a way the Barista Express's light indicator doesn't. With correct technique on both (pre-flush on Pro, waiting for the ready-light cycle on Express), shot-to-shot consistency is similar between the two machines.
Display shows 93°C but shots taste under-temperature. Display fault?
Not a display fault — almost always scale. The element reaches 93°C and satisfies the PID, but a scale layer insulates the element from the water, so actual output is 85–88°C. Descale and retest before assuming a hardware fault.
