De'Longhi Master Maintenance Guide

Thermoblock machines scale faster than boiler-based machines because the water-contact surface area relative to boiler volume is much higher. The maintenance intervals below are calibrated to this — they are shorter than what De'Longhi recommends in its user guides.

Why Thermoblock Descaling Requires More Frequency

A traditional boiler holds water at temperature continuously — scale deposits form slowly across a large internal surface. A thermoblock passes a small volume of water through a narrow passage on demand — the rapid temperature change from cold-to-hot and back to cold with each brew cycle creates more aggressive scale precipitation per unit volume. De'Longhi's own descaling indicators are calibrated to average use in average water — in hard water areas (above 8 GPG), the indicator fires too late. Use the Descaling Schedule Calculator and treat the indicator as a maximum, not a target.

Concentration Limit Never exceed 1.5g citric acid per 100ml for De'Longhi thermoblock machines. The narrow aluminium passages and EPDM seal mix requires lower pH tolerance than stainless boiler machines. De'Longhi's official EcoDecalk uses lactic acid (gentler on aluminium) — a sound choice for users who prefer not to mix their own solution.
