Full Descaling Procedure
- Prepare the solution. Mix 1.5g citric acid powder per 100ml of cold water. For a 1.5L water tank, use approximately 22g of citric acid powder. Stir until fully dissolved — undissolved crystals can clog the pump inlet valve. Fill the tank completely.
- Remove the water filter. If your Classic Pro has an in-tank water filter cartridge, remove it before descaling. The acid solution will exhaust the filter's carbon media and reduce effectiveness.
- Heat to brew temperature. Power on the machine and allow it to reach full operating temperature (ready light on). This ensures the boiler contents are at temperature when the solution enters — hot acid dissolves scale faster than cold.
- Run group head cycles. Place a container under the group head portafilter position (no portafilter inserted). Activate the brew switch for 10 seconds (dispenses approximately 30–40ml). Stop. - Run steam wand cycle. Place a container under the steam wand. Open the steam valve for 10 seconds. Close. Wait 30 seconds. Repeat twice. This passes solution through the steam circuit, which shares the boiler but has its own potential scale accumulation points.
- Continue until tank empty. Alternate group head and steam wand cycles until the water tank empties. Do not let the pump run dry — stop when the flow becomes sputtery, indicating near-empty tank.
- Flush cycle 1. Fill the tank with fresh cold water. Run the entire tank through the same alternating group head / steam wand cycle without pausing. Discard all output.
- Flush cycle 2. Repeat flush with a second full tank of fresh water. After this cycle, taste a small amount of the output from the group head. It should taste neutral. If any sourness is detectable, run a third flush.
- Backflush. After descaling, run a backflush cycle with Cafiza or Puly Caff — descaling loosens coffee oil deposits that may have been held in place by scale. The backflush clears the loosened residue from the group head circuit.
