Moccamaster Master Maintenance Guide
Maintenance Schedule
| Task | Interval | Notes |
| Carafe and basket rinse | After every use | Warm water — no soap on thermal carafe interior |
| Filter basket wipe | After every use | Damp cloth — remove coffee oil residue from rim |
| Showerhead arm soak | Monthly | Citric acid 1g/100ml max — copper component |
| Water tank rinse | Weekly | Prevents mineral film on interior walls |
| Descaling cycle | Per water hardness calculator | Citric acid 1–1.5g/100ml — see note on copper |
| Heating element check | Annual | Brew temperature test — target 185–205°F |
Copper Heating Element — Concentration Limit
The Moccamaster's copper heating element and copper showerhead arm require a maximum citric acid concentration of 1–1.5g per 100ml — lower than for stainless machines. At higher concentrations, citric acid reacts with copper to form copper citrate, leaving a blue-green residue inside the machine and potentially affecting taste. Standard descaling solution at 2g/100ml is safe for stainless but too aggressive for copper over repeated applications.
Descaling Procedure
- Mix 1.0g citric acid per 100ml cold water. Fill the water tank to MAX (1.25L = 12.5g citric acid).
- Place a carafe under the brew outlet. Run a normal brew cycle with no coffee — let the full tank run through.
- While solution is still in the carafe, pour it back into the water tank and run a second cycle. This double-pass maximizes dwell time on scale deposits in the heating element.
- Fill tank with fresh cold water. Run a complete flush cycle. Discard output.
- Run a second flush cycle with fresh water. After two flush cycles, taste a small amount from the carafe — should be neutral with no acidic note.
Showerhead Arm Maintenance
The copper arm is removed by quarter-turn counterclockwise from its mount inside the brew lid. Monthly soaking in 1g/100ml citric acid solution for 10–15 minutes clears mineral deposits from the 9 spray holes. Clear each hole with a wooden toothpick after soaking. Reinstall with a clockwise quarter-turn. Apply a small drop of food-grade silicone grease to the center swivel fitting annually to maintain smooth rotation.
