Nespresso VertuoPlus: Sensor Error and Warning Light Diagnosis

The VertuoPlus uses a centrifugal brewing system that reads a barcode on each capsule rim to determine the brew parameters. Most error conditions — indicated by red, orange, or specific blinking patterns — relate to this barcode reader, the lid position sensor, or the descaling counter. Here is the complete light-code reference and fix for each.

⚡ Quick Fix — 3 Steps
  1. Steady red light: Machine needs descaling. Run a descaling cycle before any other troubleshooting — the red light is a hard block on the VertuoPlus and the machine will not brew until it is cleared.
  2. Blinking orange (2 blinks then pause): Lid not fully closed or capsule not detected. Open, remove capsule, close firmly until you hear a click. If the error persists with no capsule inserted, clean the barcode reader lens with a dry cotton swab (see below).
  3. Blinking red (fast, continuous): Machine overheated — internal thermal protection activated. Unplug, wait 30 minutes, restart. Do not cover ventilation slots on the rear panel.

Technical Detail — Not In the Manual The VertuoPlus barcode reader is a small optical sensor on the inside wall of the capsule chamber. It reads the Centrifusion™ barcode printed on the capsule rim as the centrifugal system spins. Coffee dust and moisture accumulate on the sensor lens over time, reducing read accuracy. Nespresso's manual does not mention cleaning this sensor. A quarterly wipe with a dry cotton swab prevents the majority of "capsule not detected" errors without any descaling or reset required.

Descaling the VertuoPlus

The VertuoPlus descaling mode is entered through a specific button sequence — it cannot be run in normal brew mode. Use Nespresso's official descaling kit or citric acid at 1g per 100ml (lower concentration than other machines due to the VertuoPlus's plastic internal components). Full procedure is in the Nespresso Maintenance Guide. Calculate your interval with the Descaling Schedule Calculator.

FAQ

The VertuoPlus won't read third-party capsules. Is this a sensor fault?

Not exactly. The VertuoPlus's Centrifusion system reads a proprietary barcode that Nespresso licenses to a limited number of third-party manufacturers. Generic or unlicensed capsules do not have this barcode and will trigger the "capsule not detected" error regardless of sensor condition. Only Nespresso-licensed third-party capsules (Starbucks Vertuo, some Lavazza Vertuo lines) are compatible. This is a by-design DRM restriction, not a sensor fault.

After descaling, the red light is gone but coffee tastes different. Is this normal?

Yes, for 3–5 brews post-descaling. Residual citric acid creates a slightly sour note that clears with rinsing. The VertuoPlus descaling mode includes rinse cycles — if you completed them fully, any residual taste should clear within 3 standard brews. If a sour taste persists after 5 brews, run 3 additional water-only cycles: fill the tank, enter descaling mode, and run only the rinse phase (stop after the second water-tank cycle, before the descaling solution tank is used).

The VertuoPlus lid won't lock. Is this a separate fault from the sensor error?

Yes. A lid that will not lock or close fully usually has a used capsule stuck in the ejection mechanism, or the capsule holder has a deformed rim from a damaged pod. Open the lid as far as it will go and look into the chamber with a flashlight — a capsule that did not eject properly will be visible. Remove it with a folded piece of paper or plastic card (not metal — the barcode reader lens is directly above). Do not force the lid closed over an obstruction.
