The Classic Pro's front pressure gauge is one of its most useful diagnostic tools — and one of the most misread. This guide covers what the gauge is actually measuring, how to interpret every reading pattern, and how to trace a pressure fault to its source component.

Technical Detail — Not In the Manual The Classic Pro pressure gauge reads from the boiler at idle and from the pump outlet during extraction — it is not a puck-pressure gauge. There is a 0.5–1.5 bar difference between the gauge reading and the actual pressure at the coffee puck due to flow resistance in the group head and shower screen. A gauge reading of 9 bar corresponds to approximately 7.5–8.5 bar at the puck. This is why many Classic Pro users target 9 bar on the built-in gauge when the specialty coffee standard of 9 bar refers to puck pressure.

Diagnosing the Pressurestat

The Classic Pro uses a pressurestat (pressure-sensing thermostat) to regulate boiler temperature by maintaining a target steam pressure. The factory setting produces a boiler temperature of approximately 100–105°C. If the idle pressure reads outside the 0.9–1.1 bar window consistently, the pressurestat may need adjustment or replacement.

Pressurestat Adjustment is Advanced Adjusting the pressurestat affects boiler operating pressure and temperature simultaneously. Incorrect adjustment can cause the safety valve to vent repeatedly (too high) or produce insufficient brewing temperature (too low). This is a more technically demanding adjustment than the OPV — research the specific procedure for the Classic Pro pressurestat before attempting it.

Diagnosing Pump Pressure Loss

The Classic Pro uses a standard vibratory pump (ULKA EP5 or equivalent, 48W, 15 bar rated). These pumps are robust but accumulate scale on their inlet valve seat, which reduces effective output pressure over time. The blind basket test isolates pump performance from all other variables.

The gauge needle bounces during extraction. Is this normal?

Minor oscillation (±0.5 bar) is normal — the vibratory pump produces pulsed flow and the gauge reflects each pulse. A large bounce (±2 bar or more) or a steady rise-and-drop pattern indicates channeling in the coffee puck. Channeling means water is finding a low-resistance path through or around the coffee bed rather than flowing evenly through it. Fix: check grind distribution, ensure the basket is evenly filled before tamping, and apply consistent tamp pressure perpendicular to the basket.

The Classic Pro gauge reads correctly but espresso still tastes wrong. What next?

A correct pressure reading rules out pump, OPV, and severe restriction faults. The next diagnostic layer is temperature: the Classic Pro's thermostat-based temperature control is less precise than PID-controlled machines, and temperature surfing (waiting a specific interval after the ready light before pulling a shot) is required for consistent results.
