Backflushing the 3-Way Solenoid

The Classic Pro's 3-way solenoid valve is the component that releases group head pressure after extraction — the hiss and small drip you hear when you stop the pump. Coffee oils accumulate on the solenoid's rubber seal and valve seat over time. When the solenoid does not fully close, it causes a slow drip from the group head during idle, and when the valve seat is coated with oils, it creates excessive back-pressure that stresses the gasket and pump seals prematurely.

Monthly backflushing with Cafiza or Puly Caff (espresso machine cleaners, not descalers — these dissolve coffee oil, not mineral scale) flushes the solenoid circuit. The cleaning solution passes through the solenoid valve on each backflush cycle's pressure release phase, dissolving accumulated oils from the valve seat.

Backflush Dose — Not In the Manual Use 1g of Cafiza powder or one Puly Caff tablet per backflush session. More is not better — excess detergent requires additional rinse cycles and can leave a soapy taste residue if the flush cycles are insufficient. Run exactly 10 on/off cycles (10 seconds on, 10 seconds off each), then 5 water-only rinse cycles with the blind basket, then one final shot without coffee to confirm the group head output is clean and taste-neutral.

Shower Screen Maintenance

The shower screen (the perforated disc held by a single Philips screw in the group head) accumulates coffee oils on its flat face and in its perforations. A clogged or coated shower screen produces uneven water distribution across the puck surface, which is a primary cause of channeling. Remove, soak in Cafiza solution (1g per 200ml water) for 20 minutes, brush clean with a soft toothbrush, rinse. Reinstall with the screw snug but not overtightened.

Water Quality for the Classic Pro

The Classic Pro's brass boiler is more sensitive to water chemistry than stainless machines. Very soft water (under 2 GPG) can leach trace minerals from brass over time. Very hard water (above 12 GPG) deposits scale rapidly on the boiler interior and group head. The optimal range for the Classic Pro is 4–8 GPG (70–135 ppm TDS).
