Nespresso VertuoPlus: Won't Start Brewing

The VertuoPlus has five independent conditions that must all be true before a brew cycle will start: machine is powered on, lid is fully locked, capsule is seated and read, water tank has sufficient water, and the machine is not in an error or descaling state. This guide walks through each condition in order.

⚡ Quick Fix — 3 Steps
  1. Check the light: steady white = ready. Any other pattern = error condition — see the sensor error guide to decode it first.
  2. Open and re-close the lid with firm downward pressure until it clicks. The VertuoPlus lid lock requires positive engagement — pressing lightly is not sufficient.
  3. Remove and reinsert the water tank. The tank has a float sensor; if it is not fully seated the machine reads it as empty even when full.

FAQ

The VertuoPlus brewed fine yesterday and won't start at all today. What changed?

Most likely cause for sudden failure after normal operation: the machine auto-powered off overnight in a partially active state and the firmware is in a confused state. Unplug completely for 60 seconds, plug back in, and power on fresh. If the issue began after a specific capsule caused a problem (jammed ejection, torn capsule rim), there may be capsule debris in the ejection path — open the lid and inspect with a flashlight.

The VertuoPlus starts spinning but stops before any coffee comes out. Is this a sensor error?

No — if the centrifugal system starts spinning, the capsule was read successfully and the brew cycle initiated. A cycle that starts but produces no output is a flow restriction: scale in the internal tubing or a blocked capsule piercing needle. Run a descaling cycle first. If the issue persists after descaling, the piercing needle (the spike that punctures the capsule top) may be blocked — it can be cleared with a toothpick through the capsule insertion area with the machine unplugged.
